Democratic education and the ‘strategy of material obstacles’: a pedagogical approach to the enforcement of traffic rules in a Greek town

This paper is about people's relationship to laws, rules and regulations in a Greek town. The aim is to describe specific traffic policies, point out the underlying pedagogical assumptions and assess their potential effect in relation to the goals of a democratic education. The study springs from the author's experience as a non-native inhabitant of Greece. It is the result of daily, 15-year-long participant observation. Faced with drivers who disregard most rules of the Highway Code, especially concerning parking, the authorities in a Greek town have screwed traffic devices to the ground. Functioning like obstacles, such devices are designed to make violations materially impossible. I argue that this policy eventually teaches people not to respect traffic regulations and rules in general, thus being in conflict with the goals of a democratic education.  相似文献

Predicting future sedentary behaviour using wearable and mobile devices

Sedentarism is a common problem that can affect human health and wellbeing. Predicting sedentary behaviour is an emerging area that can benefit from data collected from sensors available in ubiquitous devices, such as wearables and smartphones. In this paper, we present an approach aiming at predicting the sedentary behaviour of a user from data collected from sensors installed in wearable/mobile devices. We compare personal and impersonal models using a real-life dataset consisting of sensing data of 48 users during 10 weeks. We found that impersonal models using Deep Neural Networks were able to accurately predict the subject’s future sedentary behaviour.  相似文献   

How Do Students Leam With Mobile Technology

The research questions being asked are： 1. How do architectural students learn with mobile technology？ and 2. What predictors lead to satisfaction in a mobile learning （M-Learning） environment？ It is understood that environment and culture contribute to the development of cognition. Critical pedagogical and constructivist theories ground this research with the view that ＂one learns from their experiences with their environments＂. The methodology used in this research includes both quantitative and qualitative methods： case studies and surveys. This research investigates how mobile technology is influencing learning. Outcomes of this research include a better understanding of how students learn with present technology, their preferred mobile devices, barriers to M-Learning, methods by which students learn best, and suggestions on how to improve M-Learning. Other outcomes of this research are the identification of variables leading to student satisfaction with M-Learning.  相似文献
